Shopping Spree

Shopping Spree

It’s funny how so many things are the same, and yet totally different all at once. Yogurt is yogurt, right? Unless you’re looking for organic whole milk yogurt. While shopping for what in my opinion is a perfectly normal dairy product, I realized that there wasn’t a gram of fat anywhere around! Non-fat. Low-fat. Fat-free. Fat-reduced. I even found quark, but the low-fat label made me put it back on the shelf in defeat.  Especially with organic products, why don’t they just let milk be milk, or yogurt be yogurt?

It took me three stores and two hours, but I finally found my organic whole milk yogurt in all its glorious fattiness! Of course, it was in a two pound container, which is a party-pack for any European. Things are definitely BIGGER here, and I’ll have to get used to that.

But there is a great selection of organic food in general here, just like “home”. I found a mini-supermarket nearby with all kinds of organic products, like coffee and tea, grains, produce, and even soap and laundry detergent. If the meat at the deli isn’t organic, it is at least free of growing hormones and anti-biotics. The cosmetics haven’t convinced me yet, but I’ve just started looking. Maybe someone out there reading this can put in a tip on that…

So far I’m pretty happy with my shopping “plunder”. Lastly, there is a local organic farm I found which sells its own produce. The shop itself is a little roadside hut with a tin roof. A wonderful anachronism in the land of the Mega-Stores.
